Rotating Skull Stereo Mutoscope Book and Rotating Helmet Stereo Mutoscope Book were installed for the Fall 2009 BFA Exhibition at the University of Texas at San Antonio. I made these old media mutoscopes, a type of early motion picture device, to pay homage to the origins of new media art. Many prototypes were made searching for the best way to make them work and with each failure I learned new things. They feature built-in red and cyan lenses for viewing anaglyph animations, which were shot using the Stereo Mount. I call them books because the animation frames are bound around the reel with a kind of cylindrical spine.
The skull symbolizes life. The helmet symbolizes humanity's physical weakness. We are all going to die.
