The Frivolous Road is a video and photography project in which I burn books to demonstrate how burning books is, at best, an extravagant way to fuel a fire. At worst it is an exceedingly destructive and unsustainable way to secure an ideology. I satirize the practice of book burning in our society but it can have serious, devastating results. For example, Spanish conquistadors burned many Maya codices out of religious fervor, irretrievably destroying hundreds of years of recorded Maya history. There are many other examples.
